I just had a lovely chat with Bernie Mitchell. (Thank you Bernie, you're awesome).
One thing that stuck with me at the end that he said, along the lines of:
"Caring comes along with not giving a shit".
Sorry if I miss quoted you Bernie! But I'm not really sorry, because regardless some good thoughts have come out it! 😆
But it's not because we don't give a shit. It's because we give so much shit to what we are building (and caring for) that we build our own worlds, boundaries and confidence to stand up to the things that don't align with where need to be.
We've seen and done things that no one else has.
We only have so much energy to give to things.
We're not here to "people please". We're here to positively build better.
Sometimes showing that you don't give a shit about a certain view is the best way to wake people up to the reality of what you do care about.
When we apply care, we start to find clarity and push against what oppresses us. We've done the work. The research. We can then bravely or confidently say, 'this is how I see it, take what you want from it'. We will walk away, with our heads held high, but our hearts will likely still hurt. We learn to pick ourselves up and keep going, because we give a shit.
I feel this so strongly, because I'm living this more and more in my life. Part of it, for me, right now, is getting older and realising that time is getting shorter. I have to double-down on what really matters.
Sometimes my actions look like I don't give a shit. But really, if you took the time to see how and why, then you would see why it's really because I deeply care. But also, I don't expect you to take the time, because your life is yours to live.
And I've seen and lived things that you haven't.
Does it mean I get it right? Definitely not.
But do I care? Yup.
Am I getting better at making better decisions? Yes.
Am I better at not giving a shit? Yes, but it's only because I give a shit.
It's better to back a world of people who give a shit, than those who clearly don't.
