I was chatting to a community member, getting feedback, and talking about plans for the future. One of the things I ended up saying to them was:
Why should the social networks have all the fun?
I've struggled a bit with the world of tech, the limitations we have, and the inability to aspire to something new, fun and inspiring. Often it feels like we just need to give up and give into the social networks.
And I've decided I'm having none of it.
Once I made this decision I felt at peace. I started not caring so much about social platforms and focused more on the relationships and how we could build something special and of value for our people.
More recently the Open Web and Fediverse movements have been inspiring me to push forward with something else. They've given the inspiration and confidence that actually we can do something different, valuable and sustainable.
It's quirky and imperfect, but it also feels so good to be in control. I am more convinced that this is what I aspire to. It doesn't mean we don't use social networks. It means we don't overly rely on them.
Building stuff is fun and inspiring and it's so much better off the social networks where we can be empowered to do more.
