What comes first? Persuasion or Community?

"Convincing someone to change their mind is really the process of convincing someone to change their tribe. If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too. You have to give them somewhere to go.

Nobody wants their worldview torn apart if loneliness is the outcome."

Here's your thought provoking thought of the day.

In such a fast forward moving world, when everything is changing constantly. When life, 10, 20 or 30 years ago is just so different from today.

Are we, as community builders responsible for not only facilitating community, but also educating people?

Our job becomes two-fold. To educate people on our vision, our goals and our reasoning for being here. And then to also build that space to help people feel like they belong.

Let's look at unschooling for example. Whilst it did exist 20 years ago, it was pretty much unheard of. The more I dove into unschooling the more I felt like I didn't belong anywhere. It's been tough. As each year went on I drifted (locally) away from most people who believe in traditional education.

It's not that I had any specific issues with how other people lived their lives, I don't. But day to day, our values and approaches to life changed in ways that others would not understand. It has created a somewhat lonely place to be, as parents and as kids.

When I think of this, I can understand why people don't pursue new and different things. Not only do you need to find belief in yourself, but you need to find a whole new community to keep you going. It's a hard ask. We've found our way with unschooling. We're still finding our way.

I just wish it had been easier.

When we build community, we need to have this in mind: how can we persuade, educate, ease the process and convince people all along the way that they are following a path that is right for them?

How can we build better communities?

We are on a quest to learn and explore what makes great communities.
